Chile 1843-So IJ 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 1095 in Jean Elsen sale 132 (Brussels, March 2017), where it sold for €1,400 (about US$1,773 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"CHILI, République (1818-), AV 8 escudos, 1843IJ. Tranche cannelée. Bel exemplaire avec brillant original. presque Superbe. (republic of Chile, gold eight escudos of 1843, reeded edge. Handsome example with original luster, nearly extremely fine.)"
This is a late date of a series struck 1839-45. There is an later standing liberty type, struck 1846-51, where liberty is resting her hand on the book of the law instead of the pedestal shown here. Neither type is rare but prices of these coins have surged in recent years. Chile converted to decimal coinage in the 1850's. This date comes with a reeded edge (KM 104.1, shown here) or a lettered edge (KM 104.2).
