The first specimen was lot 1398 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $373.75. The catalog description^[1] noted, "1842 IJ 2 escudos. Santiago mint. EF-45 (NGC). Types as above. Medium gold, with some lustre remaining. Purchased from Mortimer Hammel, April 15, 1945." This type was struck 1839-45 in small numbers and was succeeded by a refined standing liberty design (KM 102.2) 1846-51.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.875 fine gold, .189 troy oz AGW; this specimen: 6.71 grams, 23.00 mm diameter.
