SB1025-74003r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74003 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $3,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. Escudo, 1764-So J. Santiago Mint. Charles III. PCGS FINE-15. A VERY RARE type, this example has seen a fair degree of circulation, but nevertheless remains quite flashy and appealing. From the Richard August Collection." The government took over the Santiago mint in 1770 and enlarged it, increasing production plus the debasement of 1772 likely caused prior issues to be melted. This type was struck 1762, 1764 and 1766 and is very rare. Assayer J is listed for 1750-67. "Rat nose" one escudos were also struck in Mexico and Peru.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Cayón-12225, Fr-14; KM-22; Cal-1477.
