Carmagnola in northwest Italy

This specimen was lot 216 in Numismatica Ars Classica Auction 142 (Milan, November 2023) where it sold for 35,000 EUR (about US$44,940 including buyer's fees). The lot description noted,

"Carmagnola. Ludovico II di Saluzzo, 1475-1504. Doppio ducato, AV . + LVDOVICVS M – SALVTIARVM Busto corazzato a s., con berretto. Rv. SANCTVS CONSTANTIVS quattro globetti disposti a croce Aquila coronata ad ali spiegate, volta a s., con scudo in petto. Rarissimo. Bel ritratto rinascimentale, q.Spl. Acquistato privatamente da Mario Ratto nel 1966. (margraviate of Carmagnola, Louis II of Saluzzo, 1475-1504, undated double ducat. Obverse: capped and armored bust left; reverse: crowned eagle, head left, supports arms. Extremely rare, handsome renaissance portrait, about extremely fine.)"

Carmagnola was an obscure corner of the marquisate of Saluzzo, itself a minor state in northwest Italy. It was later incorporated into Sardinia and is today part of Italy.
