This type was struck in 1949 for the Portuguese colony of Cape Verde, a group of islands off the west coast of Africa. The same year saw the issue of nickel-bronze one escudo coins. The last colonial coins issued for Cape Verde are dated 1968. Unlike Angola and Mozambique, Cape Verde obtained its independence in 1975 with little bloodshed. Since independence, Cape Verde has been ruled by the same political party which controls Guinea-Bissau on the mainland; they are de facto united.
