Cape Verde 1930 50 centavos
The first specimen was lot 74308 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $3,360. The catalog description[1] noted, "CAPE VERDE. 50 Centavos, 1930. PCGS MS-65. One-year type. Satiny surfaces warmed by a thin layer of champagne patina. Scarce." This type was struck in 1930 for the Portuguese colony of Cape Verde, a group of islands off the west coast of Africa. The same year saw the issue of five, ten and twenty centavos and one escudo coins. The liberty head shown on this coin was also used on Portuguese fifty centavos coins of the 1927-68 period. The last colonial coins issued for Cape Verde are dated 1968. Unlike Angola and Mozambique, Cape Verde obtained its independence in 1975 with little bloodshed. Since independence, Cape Verde has been ruled by the same political party which controls Guinea-Bissau on the mainland; they are de facto united.
