This specimen was lot 70512 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. 100 Dollars, 1976. Ottawa Mint. ANACS MS-65. Montreal Olympics issue. This glistening Gem, offering highly prooflike surfaces, dazzles the eye and features Athena crowning a nude male athlete." This was the first coin of this denomination issued by Canada. Two versions were minted; the uncirculated version (shown here) was 14 kt gold, 27 mm diameter, while the proof version (KM 116) was 22 kt gold, 25 mm diameter and contained a half ounce of gold. The two are difficult to distinguish in photographs but the uncirculated version has a beaded rim while the proof has a plain rim. Today, they have the same catalog value.

Recorded mintage: 650,000 plus proofs (KM 116).
