Canada 1957 50 cents
This specimen was lot 72249 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. 50 Cents, 1957. Ottawa Mint. NGC PROOFLIKE-67 Cameo. A near-flawless specimen, presenting intensely mirrored fields and supremely frosted devices. The cameo nature is extensively pronounced." This type, struck at Ottawa 1953-58, is common in all grades but is scarce in unblemished condition. The use of chrome plated dies gave a polished appearance to the coins which in turn magnified the detractive effects of bagmarks.
Recorded mintage: 2,171,689.
Specification: 11.66 g, 0.800 fine silver, 29.72 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Mary Gillick and G. E. Kruger-Gray.
