Canada 1951 5 cents KM-48
This specimen was part of lot 31058 in Heritage sale 3032 (Chicago, April 2014), which sold for $646.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "George VI 7-Coin Mint Set 1951, KM 41/42a/48/43/44/45/46, Select - Gem UNC. A Choice set, nearly free of tone, with the plated nickel showing touches of rust at the edges." Canadian five cent pieces for George VI went through numerous changes from the original round, nickel style struck 1937-42. Issues of 1942-44 were brass, 1944-45 were chrome plated steel, then nickel, then without "IND IMP" 1948-50, then back to chrome plated steel 1951-52. This issue commemorates the bicentennial of the discovery of nickel, a major Canadian export.
