Canada 1859 cent
The first specimen was part of lot 26751 in Heritage sale 3022 (New York, January 2013), which sold for $763.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Mixed lot of Seven High Grade Coins, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Canada are represented. Coins grade XF-UNC. Careful examination will find some pleasant surprises here." The second specimen was lot 26584 in Heritage sale 3022 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $293.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Victoria Cent 1859 N9 DP1, KM1, XF, some rim bumps. Variety with double punched narrow 9 type I." This type, struck 1858-59, is common in all grades. It was issued with five, ten and twenty cent pieces as Canada's first decimal coinage. So many were made that no more cents would be struck until 1876. The varieties with a double punched '9' are scarce.
