Canada 1857 penny token KM-Tn3
The first specimen was lot 32612 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "Upper Canada Penny Token 1857 MS65 Brown NGC. Bank of Upper Canada issue. Much red in the devices and worthy of a strong bid." The SCWC notes that the Bank of Montreal, the Banque du Peuple and City Bank were granted the right to issue halfpenny and penny tokens, which right was exercised 1837-39, 1842-45 and 1852. The Bank of Upper Canada issued halfpenny and penny tokens 1850-57 (Upper Canada is now Ontario). However, when official provincial coinage was issued in 1858, decimal coinage similar to United States coins was chosen.
