from the Stack's Bowers June 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70424

This specimen was lot 70424 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. Upper Canada. Penny, 1854. Victoria. NGC MS-62 Brown. Plain Edge; Coin Alignment; Plain 4 variety. A pleasing example of the type, with rich brown color and some slivers of mint red." The SCWC notes that the Bank of Montreal, the Banque du Peuple and City Bank were granted the right to issue halfpenny and penny tokens, which right was exercised 1837-39, 1842-45 and 1852. The Bank of Upper Canada issued halfpenny and penny tokens 1850-57 (Upper Canada is now Ontario). However, when official provincial coinage was issued in 1858, decimal coinage similar to United States coins was chosen.
