This coin, minted in Pretoria, South Africa, was issued in 1943 while France was occupied by the Nazis. This type was issued for the Free French during the period of French mandate over the territory of Cameroon. It is accompanied by a similar fifty centimes (KM 6). It also exists with the obverse legend "CAMEROUN FRANÇAIS", i.e., without "LIBRE." Later, in 1960, Cameroon would attain independence.

Recorded mintage: 3,000,000.
