This specimen is an aluminum five francs, part of a series of aluminum fractionals issued starting in the 1970's. Burundi fell under German domination in the 1890's then passed to Belgium in 1919. She obtained indepemdence in 1961. Although blessed with unusually fertile soil for Africa, the country remains mired in poverty. Her neighbor to the north, Rwanda, was the site of a horrific genocide in the 1990's.
