Burundi 1967 100 francs
This specimen was lot 50125 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $2,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "BURUNDI. 100 Francs, 1967. PCGS PROOF-68 Deep Cameo Gold Shield. Struck for the first anniversary of the Republic of Burundi. Free of tone or haze and exhibiting strong cameo features through the designs on both sides. From the Pinnacle Collection." Burundi was a monarchy when granted independence but the king was ousted in 1966. This NCLT marks the first anniversary of that event. It was issued in a set with with KM 12 (25 francs), 13 (25 francs) and 14 (50 francs), all in gold. We presume the entire issue went to insiders and cronies.
