Jean Elsen sale 151, lot 746

This specimen was lot 746 in Jean Elsen sale 151 (Brussels, June 2022), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$2,998 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, BOURGOGNE, Duché, Eudes IV (1315-1349), AV florin d'or, vers 1327. Au type florentin. D/ + EV DVX- BGVNDA Fleur de lis. R/ S·IOHA-NNES B (rosette) Saint Jean-Baptiste deb. de f., ten. une croix longue. Très rare Petit coup sur la tranche. Très Beau à Superbe. (France, duchy of Burgundy, Odo IV, 1315-49, gold florin from about 1327, Florentine type. Obverse: fleur-de-lys; reverse: St. John the Baptist facing, bearing a long cross. Very rare, minor edge nick, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

Odo IV was duke and count of Burgundy and count of Artois. He was not connected with the Valois dukes who formed a semi-independent state based in Flanders and Brabant. That family succeeded to the duchy upon the death of Odo's grandson, Philip de Rouvres, in 1361. This coin is an imitation of the florin d'or of Florence.
