Florence (1252-1422) florin Fr-275
This specimen was lot 31170 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "Florence. Republic gold Florin ND (1252-1422) MS61 NGC, An extremely lustrous and enchanting example of the type, yielding highly pleasing surfaces and a well centered, even strike. A few light deposits within the obverse legend are noted, but do not distract from its charm." Altho the first florin was issued a generation before the first ducat, the issues of Venice gradually overwhelmed those of Florence to where few florins survive today. This type was struck for nearly two centuries without change; later issues of the fifteenth century (Fr-276) bear the arms of the mintmaster and can be dated to the years of his tenure.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.45 g, 0.986 fine gold.
