Bulgaria 2003 10 leva
This specimen was lot 44135 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description[1] noted, "BULGARIA. 10 Leva, 2003. Sofia Mint. NGC PROOF-68 Ultra Cameo. 60th Anniversary Commemorative of the Rescue of the Jewish People. An attractive Proof with hard mirrored fields and frosted cameo devices." Altho the regime congratulated itself on preserving the Bulgarian Jewish population from the Holocaust during World War Two, one quarter of Bulgaria's Jews were slaughtered during that time. While this is better than many other countries, Denmark managed to save nearly all her Jews. In 1999, the regime reformed the coinage (1000 old leva = one new lava) and pegged it to the Deutsches mark. Bulgaria has applied to join the euro but has not yet made the switch.
Recorded mintage: 2,000.
Specification: 23.30 g, 0.925 fine silver, 38.6 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-275.
