Bulgaria 1998 5000 leva
This specimen was lot 73271 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "BULGARIA. 5000 Leva, 1998. Sofia Mint. PCGS PROOF-69 Deep Cameo. Celebrating the Euro. This fantastic commemorative sits on the precipice of perfection, and the beautiful nature of the piece makes it fully attractive to behold." This NCLT was struck after the fall of communism but before the currency was reformed (1000 old leva = 1 new lev). This NCLT, issued just prior to the reform, honors the coming of the euro. Ironically, the new leva was pegged to the Deutsches mark, one of the currencies phased out by the euro.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 10 g, 0.925 fine silver, 30 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-243.
