This specimen was lot 73230 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "BULGARIA. 5 Stotinki, 1881-HEATON. Heaton Mint. Alexander I. NGC AU-58. Though lightly circulated, this example gives an oaken color and should please the many collectors of Bulgarian types." This one year type, struck soon after independence, is common. It was probably intended to match the French five centimes in weight, composition and size. One hundred stotinki made a lev.
