Stack's Bowers 2021 ANA sale, lot 44103

This specimen was lot 44103 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "BULGARIA. 2 Stotinki, 1881. Heaton Mint. Alexander I. NGC MS-63 Brown. A boldly struck coin with soft luster and mint red remaining in the protected areas." This type was probably intended to match the French two centimes in weight, composition and size. It was superseded by the 1888 2½ stotinki.

Recorded mintage: 11,646,666 plus proofs.

Specification: 1.9 g, bronze, 15.4 mm diameter.
