Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1641-HS thaler Dav-6338
This specimen was lot 73468 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. Taler, 1641-HS. Zellerfeld or Goslar Mint; mm: crossed keys between HS. August "the Younger". PCGS EF-45. This example offers medium gray surfaces with toning in the periphery leaning toward sable, and the merest hints of blue splashes in the fields. Light wear and some softly struck areas. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type of 1639-48 is not listed as rare. The photo in the SCWC shows Dav-6347, not this coin. Numerous "wild man" thalers exist from this state.
