Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1598 thaler Dav-9091
This specimen was lot 55417 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Wolfenbuttel. Taler, 1598. Goslar Mint. Heinrich Julius. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, EF Details. From the Collection of Richard Evans Norton (1872-1946)." This type of 1597-98 is listed as common. On the obverse, a Christlike figure cries, "VERITAS VINCIT OMNIA/CALVMNIA MENDACTVM" ("The truth shall overcome all lies"). The reverse admonishes, "RECTE FACIENDO NEMINEM TIMEAS" ("Do right and fear none"). The duke issued a number of other message thalers at this time as he attempted to crush a troublemaking nobility.
