Brunei, on the north coast of the island of Borneo, was long an independent sultanate but became a British protectorate in 1888 and a British colony in 1905. Internal self rule was restored in 1959 and complete independence in 1984. Oil and gas deposits have enriched the country. The current sultan, Hassanal Bolkiah, has ruled since 1967. This type was struck 1977-93, whereupon a new portrait was introduced (KM 38).
