Jean Elsen sale 155, lot 1417

This specimen was lot 1417 in Jean Elsen sale 155 (Brussels, June 2023), where it sold for €220 (about US$288 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, BRETAGNE, Duché, Jean V (1399-1442), billon blanc, 1419-1422, Rennes. Imitation des florettes royales. D/ Trois mouchetures sous une couronne. R/ Croix feuillue. Fines griffes. Belle patine. Très Beau. (France, duchy of Brittany, John V, 1399-1442, billon blanc of 1419-22, Rennes mint, imitation of the royal florette. Obverse: three ermines below a crown; reverse: leafy cross. Fine scratches, nice patina, Very Fine.)"

"John V, (1389-1442) bynamed John the Wise, was Duke of Brittany and Count of Montfort from 1399 to his death. His rule coincided with the height of the Hundred Years' War between England and France. John's reversals in that conflict, as well as in other internal struggles in France, served to strengthen his duchy and to maintain its independence."
