British West Africa 1954 1/10 penny
This specimen was lot 44094 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRITISH WEST AFRICA. 1/10 Penny, 1954. PCGS PROOF-65 Brown Gold Shield. A gorgeous, flashy Gem Proof with strong lilac to cobalt colors that dance through both sides." British West Africa comprised Gambia, Sierra Leone, Gold Coast (now Ghana) and Nigeria. The union broke up in the late fifties as the parts were granted independence. This type was struck 1954, 1956 and 1957. The 1954 is cheap but the other dates are expensive, suggesting that they were never released to circulation. The accompanying penny (KM 33) is common but the threepence (KM 35) is also scarce.
