This specimen was lot 22315 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $180. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRITISH WEST AFRICA. 3 Pence, 1919-H. Heaton Mint. PCGS MS-65 Gold Shield. A highly lustrous and attractive little Gem quality coin with aqua highlights on both sides." British West Africa comprised Gambia, Sierra Leone, Gold Coast (now Ghana) and Nigeria. The union broke up in the late fifties as the parts were granted independence. This type was struck at the Royal Mint and the Heaton mint 1913-19 and is the last threepence struck in sterling silver. It was reduced to 0.500 fine silver in 1920 and then to tin brass that same year. This is a common date.
