British West Africa comprised Gambia, Sierra Leone, Gold Coast (now Ghana) and Nigeria. The union broke up in the late fifties as the parts were granted independence. This specimen was lot 71170 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRITISH WEST AFRICA. 3 Pence, 1918-H. Heaton Mint. PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield. Mostly steely gray with some hints of peripheral toning, this near choice minor offers charming eye appeal." This type was struck 1913-19 and was converted first to billon and then to brass in 1920.
