This specimen is one of a type struck for the British Virgin Islands 1973-84 by the Franklin Mint. These were packaged in sets with the other denominations and mass-marketed to collectors in the United States. The natives of the islands, which lie east of Puerto Rico, use U. S. coins. These handsome proofs feature the green-throated Carib and Antillean crested hummingbirds. Some of the dates at the end of the series are quite scarce (less than a thousand made).
Recorded mintage: 181,000 proofs plus 53,000 uncirculated specimens.
Specification: bronze, reverse designed by Gilroy Roberts.
