British Guiana 1838 stuiver KM-Tn3
British Guiana, composed of the older colony Essequibo & Demerary and territory annexed south along the river courses. The area would achieve independence as Guyana in 1966. This specimen was lot 6514 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRITISH GUIANA. Copper Stiver Token, 1838. William IV. NGC MS-64 Brown. According to Pridmore, these interesting tokens were struck circa 1880 from rusted dies, as evidenced by the surfaces, and found in a bog in Ireland. With beautiful toning, this example entices with its unusual history." Three tokens with different obverses but matching reverses are listed.
