Bremen 1840 groten
This specimen was lot 1511 in Künker Auction 425 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €1,700 (about US$2,407 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · BREMEN, STADT Goldabschlag zu einem 1/3 Dukaten von den Stempeln des Groten 1840. GOLD. RR Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 213, Osnabrück 2012, Nr. 4725. (Germany, city of Bremen, off metal strike in gold of one-third ducat weight using 1840 groten dies. Very rare, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
This is an off metal strike of a billon coin which is fairly common. The city also struck six, twelve and 36 grote in 1840. One thaler was 72 grote.
Recorded mintage: 261,545 plus an unknown quantity in gold.
