Steve Album Auction 53, lot 777

This specimen was lot 777 in Steve Album Auction 53 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "BREMEN: Free Hanseatic City, AR 12 grote, 1667, scarce, a pleasing well struck lustrous mint state example, PCGS graded MS62, ex Joe Sedillot Collection. Finest graded 'top pop' by PCGS!" This rather scarce type was struck 1658-59, 1664-66 and 1672. Twelve grote made one-sixth of a thaler. Most Bremen issues were emitted by the free city of Bremen, still today a major port on the North Sea coast of Germany. However, the hinterland formed the archbishopric of Bremen which persisted after the region converted to Lutheranism in the mid-1500's. Finally, as a consequence of the Thirty Years War, the state was secularized and handed over to the king of Sweden and ruled by him until 1719.

Recorded mintage: 145,000.

Specification: silver, 29 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-123.
