This type was introduced in 1998 and is still in production as of 2024, although the 2019 was struck only for collector sets. A slight modification occurred in 2003 when the stripes on the reverse were moved relative to the "T" in "CENTAVOS". Pedro I, the first emperor of independent Brazil, is featured on the obverse. Currently (December 2024), US$1 = 6.08 reais, in December 2014, US$1 = 2.65 reais. We wonder how this specimen got so worn without breaking thru the plating.
Recorded mintage: 444,288,000.
Specification: 4.8 g, copper plated steel, 20 mm diameter, reeded edge.
