In 1942, during the presidency of Getulio Vargas, the réis was dropped as a unit of currency after 400 years and the cruzeiro adopted. The cruzeiro itself was replaced in 1967 by the "novo cruzeiro," worth 1000 old cruzeiros. The "novo cruzeiro" lasted until 1985 and was replaced by the cruzado. This ten centavos was struck in copper-nickel and stainless steel in large quantities 1967-79. It was accompanied by one, five, ten, twenty, fifty centavos and one cruzeiros, all in copper-nickel or pure nickel.
