Brazil 1825-C 40 reis
Shown is a copper forty réis from the Cuiaba mint in Brazil. The type was struck in Rio and Bahia 1823-31; approximately 73 million pieces were issued (not including counterfeits), an enormous quantity for the thinly populated country. Goias (KM 377.2-.3, mintmark "G") and Cuiaba (KM 377.1, mintmark "C") issued small quantities as well. Despite the large issue, high grade specimens are rare. Cuiaba forty réis are priced about triple the common Rio issues.
By the 1830's, so many had been issued that the public began to refuse them. In 1835, the government called them in and countermarked them to half their former value to increase their acceptance. Private and counterfeit countermarks also exist, making this series confusing but fascinating to collect.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: copper.
