Brazil 1812-R 640 reis
The first specimen was part of lot 23308 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $2,820. The catalog description[1] noted, "Collection of Silver 640 Reis, a great date run of this larger denomination with many scarce dates and varieties included. Grades are surprisingly nice with most coins in the Fine to VF category." This type was struck 1809-12 at Rio (KM 256.2, common), 1809-10 and 1816 at Bahia (KM 256.1) and 1810-16 at Minas Gerais (KM 256.3, very scarce). This date is rather scarce. The second specimen was lot 44345 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[2] noted,
"BRAZIL. 640 Reis, 1812-R. Rio de Janeiro Mint. Joao as Prince Regent. NGC AU-55. Struck over a "J" Series 600 Reis of Jose I with previous Shield countermark on obverse; issued by decree of 18 April 1809. Highly attractive and enchanting, with very little evidence of any handling and with charming brilliance remaining among the protected areas. Some subtle toning is observed, as well as the revaluation counterstamps of the host coin. Rather RARE and seldom encountered occurrence with few examples appearing exhibiting the previous shield countermark and a such is highly interesting and desirable."
Recorded mintage: 46,537.
Specification: 17.92 g, 0.917 fine silver.
