This specimen was lot 23888 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $3,055. The catalog description[1] noted, "Maria I gold 4000 Reis 1805/4-(B), MS62 NGC. A fantastic type representative with a sharp strike and radiant luster. Described as a 5/2 overdate on the NGC holder. From The RLM Collection, Part II." The type was struck 1801-05 at Bahia without mintmark. It is the first type of the nineteenth century. It is the largest of the "moedas provinciales" series and the only one that can be called somewhat common, tho this type is rather scarce.
