Brazil 1782-B 800 reis
This specimen was lot 1213 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $7,187.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "1782 800 reis. Bahia mint. EF-40 (NGC). Types as above. Medium gold, usual weakness of strike above central reverse. A very rare type. Probably from J.C. Morganthau and Co. (Wayte Raymond)'s sale of the Waldo C. Newcomer collection, February 1935, Lot 108 (unplated, called 'fine and rare,' $16); John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."
This type was struck 1782 and 1786 only; both dates are very rare. The denomination was introduced in 1727 during the reign of João VI and struck fairly steadily thereafter but always in small numbers. The type shown here is the last and rarest of the series.
