Brazil 1749-R 3200 reis
This gold 3200 réis was minted at the Rio mint for Brazil as a three year type. The commonest Brazilian gold coin of colonial times was the 6400 réis, called a "joe" in English speaking countries. This coin would have been a "half joe" but was issued in very small numbers. The specimen was lot 20657 in Heritage sale 3009 (Chicago, April 2010), where it sold for $16,100. The catalog description[1] noted, "João V gold 3200 Reis 1749R, XF-AU with sharply defined details on both sides, cleaned long ago leaving the surfaces slightly dulled. The edge milling is fully intact. Extremely rare type and denomination, and a very pleasing example." This type was issued 1739, 1741 and 1749; despite the limited issue the Rio mint products outnumber the Bahia mint products.
