Brazil 1740-B 3200 reis
This specimen was lot 23297 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $19,975. The catalog description[1] noted, "João V gold 3200 Reis 1740-B, VF Details NGC (removed from jewelry), quite bold with very lightly burnished surfaces and a tiny mount mark at the top. Extremely rare date and type. The 4 in the date appears to be cut over a 3." The commonest Brazilian gold coin of colonial times was the 6400 réis, called a "joe" in English speaking countries. This coin would have been a "half joe" but was issued in very small numbers. This type was struck in Rio 1739, 1741 and 1749 and in Bahia 1727-50.
