The minting of copper twenty réis began in 1693 and continued steadily thru the eighteenth century. This specimen was struck at the Bahia mint for Brazil in 1729-31 and is the first copper coin to bear the "B" mintmark. Varieties exist, depending on the spelling of the reverse legend; some are "PECUNIA" and some are "PECVNIA." Many were countermarked in 1809 to raise their value to forty réis. Issues became larger and more frequent after 1802. Large numbers were minted until 1831, well after independence. Counterfeits are numerous but are collected alongside the genuine issues.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: copper; this specimen 13.8 g, 35.3 mm diameter.
