Brazil 1703-R 2000 reis

This gold 2000 réis was minted at the Rio mint in Brazil 1703 only, among its first issues. It was accompanied by a gold 4000 réis (KM 101). The specimen is lot 20651 in Heritage sale 3009 (Chicago, April 2010), where it sold for $27,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "Pedro II of Portugal gold 2000 Reis 1703R, choice toned VF+, well-struck details and strong overall eye appeal. Extremely rare type and a most collectible example. Missing from Norweb, Eliasberg and all advanced Brazilian/Portuguese collections we know."
