Brazil (1688) 250 reis
This silver 250 réis was counterstamped in Brazil about 1688. This specimen was lot 13056 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $1,058. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 250 Reis, ND (1688). NGC EF-45. Pedro II (1683-1706). Act of June 14, 1688 circular overstrike of both obverse and reverse legends, over a Type IV (1663), crowned 250 Reis countermark of Alfonso VI on an undated 200 Reis of João IV of Lisbon Mint. Toned. Host coin and crowned countermark VERY FINE, circular overstrike EXTREMELY FINE. From the Piracicaloa Collection." This counterstamp is mentioned in Amato[2] but not in the SCWC. In 1695 mints were opened in Brazil, obviating the need for countermarks.

This specimen was lot 20275 in Heritage sale 3006, where it sold for $322. The catalog description noted, "250 Reis Counterstamped Coinage of 1688, Russo 92, crowned 250 counterstamped on a 1/2 Cruzado of João IV Lisbon Mint. Nice toned VF, the counterstamp is weakly applied on the reverse."
