Künker sale 400, lot 74

This specimen was lot 74 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €26,000 (about US$33,730 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, BRANDENBURG, MARKGRAFSCHAFT, Johann Sigismund, 1608-1619. Dicker doppelter Reichstaler 1611, MH, Cöln. * IOH · SIGISM · D : G · MAR · BR · S · ROM · IMP · ARCHIC · E · E · Geharnischtes Hüftbild r. mit umgelegter Feldbinde, mit der Rechten das Zepter schulternd, die Linke am Schwertgriff, darunter die Jahreszahl 1611 zwischen Verzierungen//I · PRVS · IVL - · CLIV · MO · D · Fünffach behelmtes, mehrfeldiges Wappen mit Mittelschild, unten r. die Signatur MH (Melchior Hoffmann, Münzmeister in Cöln 1604-1620). Von allergrößter Seltenheit. Das beste bekannte Exemplar. Sehr attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Patina und feinem Prägeglanz, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, electorate of Brandenburg, John Sigismund, 1608-19, double thaler of 1611, Coln mint. Obverse: armored half-length portrait with sash, scepter and sword; reverse: five helmeted manifold arms with escutcheon, initials below. Extremely rare, the finest known example, very attractive example with handsome patina and fine luster, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The Cöln mint noted here is not the city on the Rhine but a small town on the Spree. This date comes with or without mintmaster initials. It was reissued in 1614.
