Stack's Bowers 2015 NYINC sale, lot 612
Brandenburg Stacks Jan15-612r.jpg

This specimen was lot 612 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $7,931.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brandenburg-Bayreuth. Taler, 1671. Christian Ernst (1655-1712). NGC MS-65. Finest certified example. A very appealing and interesting piece. Struck to commemorate the marriage of Christian Ernst to Sophie Luisa von Wurttemberg. Radiant sun next to the planet Venus, across the zodiac with Leo and Virgo; Reverse: A crowned eagle with the arms of Brandenburg-Bayreuth and Württemberg. Toned with its natural lustrous surfaces showing through. Well struck with very sharp details. A superb example with great eye appeal. From the Rockaway Collection." Today, Bayreuth is famous as the site of the Wagner festival but in the seventeenth century, it was not part of Bavaria but an independent principality ruled by a junior branch of the Hohenzollerns. The SCWC catalogs this scarce type as a gulden (= 2/3 thaler) but it is a full thaler and we have catalogued it as such.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM 80, Dav-6273.
