Künker sale 406, lot 3956

This specimen was lot 3956 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,149 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG IN FRANKEN, BRANDENBURG-ANSBACH, MARKGRAFSCHAFT, Christian Friedrich Karl Alexander, 1757-1791. Dukat 1763, Schwabach. GOLD. RR Winz. Kratzer, fast vorzüglich. (Germany, margraviate of Brandenburg-Ansbach, Christian Friedrich Karl Alexander, 1757-91, ducat of 1763, Schwabach mint. Very rare, hairlines, about extremely fine.)"

This one year type is rare. Christian Friedrich Karl Alexander, the last margrave, sold his province to his cousin, the king of Prussia, in 1791. The margrave then became a gentleman farmer in Britain while Wilhelm attempted to cope with French invasion and occupation. Ansbach and Bayreuth were turned over to Bavaria in 1806 as part of Napoleon's reorganization of Germany.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.47 g.

Catalog reference: KM 260, Fr-358; Slg. Wilm. 1069; Slg. Grüber (Auktion Künker 267) 4606.
