Jean Elsen sale 164, lot 952

This specimen was lot 952 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €4,400 (about US$6,126 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR ducaton, 1642, Anvers. Deuxième type. Piéfort de poids triple. D/ B. dr. et cuir. à d. R/ Écu couronné, tenu par deux lions. En dessous, le bijou de la Toison d'or. Extrêmement rare. Provient de notre vente 2, 14 novembre 1984, 604 et de notre vente 131, 10 décembre 2016, 559. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, triple ducaton, 1621-65, Antwerp mint, second type, piedfort of triple weight. Obverse: draped and armored bust right; reverse: two lions support large crowned royal arms, decorated with the Order of the Golden Fleece. Extremely rare, Very Fine.)"

The regular type, issued 1636-65 from Antwerp (with hand mintmark) and Brussels (angel face mintmark), is scarce but not rare. The multiple ducatons, which include double and quadruple issues, are all rare. Triple ducatons of this portrait were struck intermittently 1637-57. The other provinces issued ducatons, including Artois, Flanders, Tournai and Luxembourg but Flanders was the only other province to strike a triple ducaton.
