JE164-0801r.jpg

This specimen was lot 801 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €70 (about US$98 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Charles Quint (1506-1555), Cu courte, 1547, Anvers. D/ T. cour. à d. R/ Lion à g. Provient de la collection A.M. Huntington et de notre vente 115, 8 décembre 2012, 150. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Charles V, 1506-55, copper courte of 1547, Antwerp mint. Obverse: crowned head right; reverse: lion left. Very Fine.)"

This type was struck at Antwerp 1543-56 (the hand mintmark is after the date) and Maastricht 1549-56 with many variations in the spelling of the legends. Numista states one courte was two mites. We note a similar coin from Flanders, called a korte.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.91 g, copper, 19 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: G.H. 198-1b; W. 694; VH 234.
