Brabant (1435-37) 1/4 gros
This specimen was lot 743 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €160 (about US$223 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe le Bon (1430-1467), AR quart de gros, 1435-1437, Bruxelles. D/ Armes de Bourgogne en plein champ. R/ + MONETA NOVA DVC BRAB Croix longue cantonnée de deux lis et de deux lions, un lion en coeur. Très rare. presque Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Philip the Good, 1430-67, silver quarter gros, circa 1435-37, Brussels mint. Obverse: arms of Burgundy in a plain field; reverse: long cross cantonned with two lilies and two lions, with a lion at the center. Very rare, about Very Fine.)"
Three emissions are reported for this type, the first of 1435-37, shown here, the second of 1454-56, struck at Mechelen, and the third of 1466-67, struck at Louvain. Numista notes that the third emission of 1466-67 was debased to 0.240 fine.
Recorded mintage: 408,200 for the first emission.
