Jean Elsen sale 145, lot 1436

This specimen was lot 1436 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €1,600 (about US$2,280 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe le Bon (1430-1467), AV écu d'or (klinkaert), 1431-1434, Louvain. D/ + PHS DVX BVRG- BRA-BANTIE Z LIMB Le duc trônant de f. dans une stalle gothique, ten. l'épée et son écu. R/ + XPC VINCIT XPC REGNAT XPC IMPERAT Croix fleuronnée dans un quadrilobe cantonné de trèfles. Très rare. Très Beau. Provient de notre vente 80, 12 juin 2004, 1321. Devenu duc de Brabant à la mort de Philippe de Saint-Pol, Philippe le Bon ordonna dans un premier temps de poursuivre l'émission des monnaies d'or ou d'argent avec les coins de son prédécesseur. Ce n'est qu'à partir de mars 1431 que le duc de Bourgogne fit frapper monnaie en Brabant à ses armes, en poursuivant à Louvain l'émission entamée sous Philippe de Saint-Pol: klinkaert et Pieter d'or, cromsteert et Pieter d'argent. (duchy of Brabant, Philip the Good, 1430-67, undated gold écu, Louvain mint. Obverse: the duke seated under a gothic canopy, bearing a sword and his arms; reverse: floriate cross in a quadrilobe cantonned with four trefoils. Very rare, Very Fine.)"
